Why BIS 
in Asia? 

In modern Asia, many governments are committed to the private sector as the engine of economic growth. It is established that economic growth depends on successful business, which requires reliable information on markets, technology, new opportunities, etc. Sourcing of relevant information has become indispensable for doing competitive business more than ever.

Globally, the speed of business transactions and decisions has tremendously increased due to rapid developments of ICT in recent years. At the same time, ICT has connected even remote rural areas to the global information network. Both circumstances have made successful and competitive enterprises investing in information, which is generated with latest ICT. Those, who still rely only on traditional information sources, such as neighbors, friends and known business partners, miss the benefits of fast growing global value chains and lose competitiveness.

This situation has created demand for externally validated Business Information Services (BIS) from the side of small industrialists and agricultural producers in remote locations. Most of them cannot afford the costs and time to generate and validate information themselves. At the same time, potential providers of BIS in such locations, e.g. local chambers and business associations are well aware of this demand. Still they shy away from high-risk investments in ICT and capacity- building due to lack of know-how or competency. This leaves an open gap ahead and creates an opportunity for BIS…
